New report about greater abatement potential of ICT was presented at the UN climate conference in Qatar
The report SMARTer2020 published today shows the abatement potential of ICT-technologies. Up to 16.5 percent of all CO2 emissions could be saved - in numbers: 9.1 gigatons CO2. Products, services and solutions of Deutsche Telekom count into this abatement potential. For example: videoconferencing and cloud computing.
Luis Neves, Group Climate Change and Sustainability Officer at Deutsche Telekom and Chairman of Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) presented together with Ms. Christiana Figueres, General Secretary of the United Nations Convention for Climate Change the new report SMARTer2020 today at the 18th UN climate conference in Qatar:
Luis Neves stated that The ICT revolution is powering even more innovations than we had imagined, leading to greater potential to cut GHG emissions, and a smaller ICT footprint. SMARTer2020 shows the abatement potential of ICT is seven times the size of the ICT sectors direct emissions. Information technology can drive the transition to a low carbon economy, with greater efficiency, and the preservation of our environment.
SMARTer2020 is an evolution from SMART2020 study that was published in 2008 having first evaluated the CO2 reduction potential for the ICT industry and public. The Study was commissioned by the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) and was carried out by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
