Security in the cloud

In cloud computing, customers attach maximum importance to security and data privacy.

Consumers and business customers attach maximum importance to security and data privacy - and that also goes for cloud computing.

Telekom ensures the greatest possible protection of customer data thanks to high security standards complying with German law, cutting-edge data centers and many IT security measures.

In cloud computing, data and IT applications are stored in data centers. How safe they are there depends on the relevant cloud provider. In his 2011 Annual Report, Alexander Dix, Berlin’s Data Privacy Officer, demands for example detailed and clear contractual regulations from providers, with details on the security concept, certification, the place where the service is performed and general legal conditions.

Highly sensitive customer data
Telekom already does that. The company runs 90 highly secure data centers from Frankfurt to Singapore to Houston, all of which fulfill strict German and EU regulations. A certificate confirms they comply with the highest standard of security worldwide. The greatest security is offered by the 30 German data centers, where all the data of residential Telekom cloud users is stored, among other things. In comparison, the data at cloud locations in other countries can sometimes be accessed by government bodies. According to the LIFE report "Data security as an advantage for a location", more than three quarters of the companies surveyed prefer their data to be processed where this is done subject to the requirements of German data privacy law. Above all, that is expedient when highly sensitive customer data is involved - for instance from public agencies, the healthcare sector, the high-tech industry or science. The advantage Telekom offers: Customers themselves can decide where their data is to be stored.

Redundant data storage
At the customers' request, their data is additionally encrypted when transported in the network. In addition, all the data at a data center is backed up at another data center. If one fails, the other takes over. Within each data center, redundancies also protect individual systems against a total failure. The group repels hacking, viruses or Trojans thanks to its expertise in IT security and constantly updated precautions. And: Stringent access controls, security services, fences, as well as fire and other alarms mean Telekom also prevents traditional security risks in its data center environment.
