(International Securities Identification Number. The ISIN is a globally recognized identification for securities and is to replace the national systems (WKNs - WertpapierKennNummern ¿ Securities Identification Numbers). As a rule, the national securities identification numbers can be transferred into ISIN: - if the national securities identification number has less than nine digits, zeros are added to the left of the number. ¿ the two-letter country code in accordance with ISO 3166 will prefix the nine digits. ¿ a check digit will be added at the end. Example: Deutsche Telekom, Symbol DTE, ISIN DE0005557508, WKN 555750. To date no unified conversion date has been agreed and there is no obligation to convert the national securities identification numbers to ISIN. After many postponements, the conversion is to take place on April 22, 2003 in Germany, however the German Stock Exchange will be introducing the ISIN in October 2002.
