Deutsche Telekom launches new electromobility and healthcare projects

  • Successful cooperation with Friedrichshafen will continue.
  • The future will focus on the energy, healthcare and automotive industries.
  • René Obermann: "Realignment supports our innovation strategy."

Deutsche Telekom is starting off the New Year with new electromobility and telemedicine projects. The Bonn-based Group will work together with the city of Friedrichshafen for another three years to implement these projects, which will focus on smart energy, healthcare, and automotive networks. Deutsche Telekom wants to grow in these Group business areas and achieve revenues of one billion euros by 2015. René Obermann, CEO of Deutsche Telekom states, "We are continuing our successful partnership with Friedrichshafen. In this effort we are focusing on smart energy, healthcare, and transportation networks. This realignment sup-ports Deutsche Telekom's innovation strategy." Andreas Brand, mayor of the city of Friedrichshafen says, "Because of the T-City project, which is the first project of its kind worldwide, the city of Friedrichshafen has established itself as an innovative business location both in Germany and internationally." Electromobility connects smart automotive and energy networks. In terms of mobility, the city of Friedrichshafen and Deutsche Telekom are launching a project that integrates connected cars into the power grid of the future. E-cars will serve as mobile energy storage units and help energy providers offset oversupplies in the network. These oversupplies can result from photovoltaic systems during periods of long-term sunny weather or from wind turbines during periods of persistently strong winds. Consumers in future will benefit from a smart energy network with flexible pricing models. Since the beginning of this year, power companies have been required to offer these kinds of products and services. Your smartphone becomes your car key. The city of the Zeppelin and Deutsche Telekom, together with rental car and car sharing businesses, want to use e-cars to develop new concepts in mobili-ty. For example, if you arrive in Friedrichshafen by public transportation and want to continue on with a rental car, you will stay connected throughout your entire journey in future. Car rental companies will be automatically informed if their customers are delayed. Furthermore, these customers will be able to find and open the door of their rental cars using their smartphones. Deutsche Tele-kom and the city of Friedrichshafen want to find out how smart networks can help organize traffic more efficiently. In 2010, German automobile club ADAC estimated 13,948 km of traffic jams in the summer months alone. This is ap-proximately the distance from Berlin to Beijing and back. Teleconsultation - doctors can obtain a second opinion via a smart net-work. A second project will begin in 2012 in the area of healthcare. The hospital in Friedrichshafen plans to integrate and network with a hospital located outside of the Lake Constance region so that its doctors can obtain a second opinion from colleagues when reviewing a patient's test results. Today, doctors from the cities of Constance and Friedrichshafen are meeting via video for a tumor conference, thus saving driving time so they can spend more time with their patients. Also in Friedrichshafen, Deutsche Telekom is developing tablet PCs, together with housing developer Fränkel, that enable senior citizens to remain in their own homes longer and unassisted, by making it possible for them to request domestic help, meals on wheels, or medicine at the touch of a button.
