Deutsche Bahn and Telekom cooperate on the transport of the future

  • Partnership for more flexible travel
  • Comprehensive mobility concept begins testing
  • Travel planning via cell phone

Within the context of the planned expansion of its car-sharing portfolio, Deutsche Bahn wishes to cooperate closely with Deutsche Telekom. Telekom’s "Networked Car" Group business area and DB Rent GmbH have agreed a strategic technological partnership for electro-mobility, car-sharing and fleet management. The aim is closer networking of trains, cars and energy systems. For customers, travel planning will therefore be more versatile, convenient and flexible via cell phone in the future. In addition, with the help of modern communication, passenger transport is to become more environmentally friendly. With its mobile communications technology, Deutsche Telekom already ensures the secure transfer of data to and from Deutsche Bahn's car-sharing vehicles in pilot projects. Furthermore, additional telematics services will be made available for the car-sharing system in future as part of the partnership. They include, for example, finding, booking and opening vehicles using a cell phone. However, mobility concepts covering various modes of transport are also to be tested. This involves effectively linking railways and roads. "The future of mobility lies in the intelligent networking of modes of transport. By providing a system which links all offers together, intermodal travel will be possible very soon," emphasizes Dr. Andreas Knie, Area Manager for Intermodal Services and Business Development at DB Rent GmbH. Horst Leonberger, head of the "Networked Car" Group business area of Deutsche Telekom , adds: "Deutsche Telekom connects the world of mobile communications with cars and trains. This supports customers with their individual travel planning and allows the fleet operator to create new mobility offers." Here, Deutsche Telekom falls back on its wide-ranging know-how of telematics systems. This includes integrating vehicles in the Internet and including them in the company processes of car manufacturers, fleet operators and mobility service providers. Deutsche Bahn and Telekom have already begun an initial pilot of electric vehicles linked to three networks in Friedrichshafen by Lake Constance. Here it is demonstrated how cars, trains and energy systems can be effectively linked to each other. Cars can be rented spontaneously using a special cell-phone app. The car transfers data such as the range and power level via mobile communications to the lessee’s smartphone. An intelligent meter in the charging station records the charging energy and creates the preconditions for, e.g., refueling with regenerative energy.
