5G stands for more than just performance and bandwidth. Whereas 4G (LTE) was still a truly mobile transmission standard, the next generation will be a worldwide communications standard for integrated networks. Deutsche Telekom belongs to the drivers of this development and will continue to do so in future.
“The world becomes more and more connected. In future, almost everything will communicate with each other. 5G will provide a further basis for that,” says Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, Chief Technology Officer for Deutsche Telekom and Chairman of the NGMN Board (Next Generation Mobile Networks). “With 5G we create a worldwide standard for homogeneous communication. That means a common global language – because communication has no local borders.”
The fifth generation is expected to be ready for the market by 2020. Data output that is hundreds of time faster, a reaction time of just one millisecond, extreme reliability and further availability will make the age-old demand for a higher transfer rate a thing of the past. The vastly improved performance enables new business models, for instance in the health care and automobile industries, that are not possible today.
A network that is meant to react quicker than a blink of the eye will require the development of a solid integrated infrastructure behind the scenes. Industry trends such as virtualization and software defined networks, which also play a central role in the changing infrastructure at Deutsche Telekom, help with this development by making more performance and flexibility possible.
