Up to 26 million bank cards soon to be in mobile wallets

Deutsche Telekom holds top-level discussions with "Volks- und Raiffeisenbanken" Group to set the stage for mobile payment.

At CeBIT initial steps were taken to set the stage for mobile payment processes in Germany: During the trade fair executive representatives of German mobile communications providers met with board members of the "Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken" Group (BVR) of banking institutions. The discussions focused on the integration of bank cards ("girocards") in the mobile wallets offered by mobile network operators. This collaboration could mean that the more than 26 million customers using Germany's most popular card payment process may soon be able to integrate their "girocard mobile" in digital wallets like MyWallet from Deutsche Telekom, enabling them to pay for goods and services conveniently and securely via smartphones.

This collaboration represents an extraordinary first step toward ensuring the market success of mobile payment. The project is currently in the demonstration phase of the proof of concept. During the meeting at CeBIT all project partners emphasized the significance of the venture and discussed the next steps involved in bringing the solution to market. Specific decisions to promote mobile payment are expected to be announced by midyear.

Visitors to the Deutsche Telekom stand at CeBIT were able to experience how the integration of "girocard mobile" in MyWallet can be realized. This showcase project also drew the attention of representatives from leading retailers during the trade fair.
