E-world 2013:
Change in energy policy as a stress test: Deutsche Telekom handles masses of data

Jan 10, 2013

  • Meter Data Management processes five billions sets of data per day
  • Solution for a great many time-critical applications
  • Standardized service for a monthly flat-rate price

In future, 48 million meters will give an overview of power generation and consumption in Germany. Deutsche Telekom is therefore taking the E-world 2013 trade fair as the opportunity to present Meter Data Management, a system that processes millions of sets of data very quickly. Its special system architecture lets it handle time-critical jobs for greater network stability almost in real time.

"The change in energy policy is an enormous challenge for data processing," says Gabriele Riedmann de Trinidad, Head of Deutsche Telekom's Energy business area. "That's why we have developed a Meter Data Management system of our own that processes the information for all downstream IT systems."

Stress test passed
The solution processed data from 50 million simulated electronic meters in its first stress test. Read out at intervals of 15 minutes, that generates a daily volume of almost five billion data sets. Meter Data Management evaluates this information and helps avoid critical situations on the network. The system can also be used for other scenarios: It also processes load-dependent rates, for example, and sends out signals to control virtual power stations.

Data Meter Management meets all current security standards and incorporates the privacy protection profile requirements of the German Federal Office for Information Security. Utility companies use the system as a standardized application for a monthly flat-rate price or as a customized solution.
