E-world 2013: Telekom's energy solutions for businesses and utilities

  • Meter reading for special contract customers
  • Process mass data for a fixed monthly rate
  • Energy efficiency solutions save up to 60% in IT costs.

Deutsche Telekom will present its readout service for industrial meters at the E-world 2013. Special contract customers with power consumption of more than 100,000 kilowatt hours or 1.5 million kWh gas annually can already profit from the new digital meters: The readout service from Telekom is more reliable and economic than the recorded power measurement (RLM) historically used. The solution comprises transmission technology, processor capacities and central data management for a fixed monthly rate for each metering point. New meters can be added quickly and the old ones removed. As a service, the solution requires no investment. "Let's not delude ourselves: The change in energy policy is an enormous challenge for data processing," says Gabriele Riedmann de Trinidad, Head of Deutsche Telekom's Energy business area. "That's why we have developed our own Meter Data Management that can prepare and analyze information." In its first stress test, the solution processed figures from 50 million simulated meters every fifteen minutes - as many as all the households in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands combined would produce. At the same time, Meter Data Management (MDM) is only one component in a series of services pertaining to smart metering: They range from data readout, value transmission and information preparation for IT systems through to data processing in typical energy processes with SAP. Telekom offers all services for market roles of supplier, network and metering point operations from a single source at a fixed monthly rate or as cloud computing - for market communication or billing, for instance. The solutions for energy management open up significant savings potential. Just a little effort yields considerable reduction in information technology costs. This is because the energy efficiency solution from Telekom uses existing data connections and energy programs in PCs, printers and servers. The automated function for powering on and off devices alone saves up to 60% in energy. Telekom itself already operates the solution at 8,500 properties and reads 700,000 meter points.
