What ideas will come true with big data in future? Over 200 candidates provided answers to this question when they took part in the startup competition organized by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy for the special "Big Data - Smart Data" prize from T-Systems and Empolis. At the CeBIT fair, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Sigmar Gabriel presented the three winners with the special prize money worth a total of EUR 10,000. The unired team from Jena took first place with its idea for a comprehensive information system to coordinate fire and rescue service assignments. Combined with applications for preparing and following up deployments, the system's prompt exchange of information across all public authorities makes rescue work more efficient and helps save human lives. Second place went to the Berlin team DVISUS, which aggregates all the real estate advertised online by portals, newspapers and real-estate offices in a geo-database. It enables estate agents and property developers to perform ad-hoc analyses on the cost-effectiveness of individual investments in property renovation and extensions. In addition, the solution offers overviews of all the real estate ever marketed on the Internet, including sale and rental prices for specific addresses, which can be used with different filters and visualize information relating to the surrounding area. With a solution for timber measurement using a smartphone and app that handles the former complex measurement process in a matter of seconds, the Fovea team from Uslar in Lower Saxony has taken a major step toward a new European standard in timber logistics, and thus gained third place. "The number of ideas that were presented with a social component really impressed us. It shows the direction in which big data can still develop a lot of beneficial potential," comments Christian Wirth, vice president T-Systems BI & Big Data. "Big data offers vast opportunities for German business. The three prize winners showed that young companies with smart ideas are in an ideal position to achieve success in this field," says Empolis managing director Dr. Christian Schulmeyer.
