Telekom presents Federal Minister of Health "Mobile ward round 2.0"

  • Deutsche Telekom drives forward digitization of the healthcare system
  • Lukashospital in Neuss leads the way
  • Federal Minister of Health Gröhe finds out more about practical examples

Federal Minister of Health Hermann Gröhe has been finding out about the "Mobile ward round 2.0" project at Lukashospital in Neuss. The use of tablets at the hospital makes work processes easier and improves the quality of healthcare services. Doctors, nurses and patients are benefitting from the possibilities offered by digitization as all treatment-related information is available directly at the patient's bedside in real time. In December, Gröhe introduced the E-Health Act and other measures, creating the basis for ensuring that doctors, hospitals and health insurance providers will be able to exchange information digitally in the future.

"Mobile ward round 2.0" at Lukashospital in Neuss is a great example of how IT can be used to provide better information to patients and prevent transmission errors," said the Federal Health Minister.

Dr. Nicolas Krämer, Commercial Director of Lukaskrankenhaus hospital, added: "The system provides many benefits. Among other things, the time-consuming search for documents, images or laboratory results is dispensed with. That means our doctors are now able to focus even more clearly on what is important – the treatment of patients."

Benefits for doctors and patients
The technology at the hospital in Neuss is based on the hospital information system iMedOne® and App iMedOne Mobile® developed and implemented by Telekom Healthcare Solutions. So far, each equipped with an iPad mini, about 150 doctors and 50 caregivers at each location within the hospital can access all clinical patient information. Hardcopies of files – such as those still used in the majority of the approx. 2,000 hospitals in Germany – shall soon be consigned to history.

By means of the mobile devices, the doctors and caregivers record vital sign data directly at the patient's bedside, modify medication, change diagnoses, take pictures of wounds or provide patients with comments on their health status right then and there at the bedside, for example by means of X-ray pictures. The quick access to data in real-time helps to prevent errors, improves the quality of the documentation and care and leads to more time available to care for the patients.

Experts are impressed by the "Mobile ward round 2.0" as well: At the Enterprise Mobility Summit the hospital in Neuss received as many as two awards – the award in the Business Process Mobilization category and the Public's Choice Award.

Deutsche Telekom drives digitization forward
Deutsche Telekom Board of Management Member Reinhard Clemens accompanied Federal Minister Gröhe on his visit to Neuss."Digitization will result in fundamental changes in all areas of everyday life, including the healthcare industry. This is only possible with a reliable and secure network. We are committed to our role as a partner for digital transformation," said Clemens.

The Bonn-based telecommunications Group is currently the only provider in Germany to provide hospitals with such a range of services: not only a hospital information system, but also the networking of their facilities with the necessary communications infrastructure such as Wi-Fi, LAN and mobile device management, plus the storage of their data in a secure cloud - and all from a single source.
