Deutsche Telekom has agreed to cooperate with NetCologne, a Cologne-based fixed-line network operator. Just a few days ago, the company revealed its mobile network cooperation agreement with Telefónica.

We asked Board Member for Germany Niek Jan van Damme three questions.

Mr. van Damme, what does the cooperation with NetCologne consist of?

Niek Jan van Damme: In addition to our mobile network cooperation agreement with Telefónica, we’re establishing fixed-line network cooperations to advance broadband expansion. NetCologne and DT want to enable mutual network usage for fast Internet connections in the future. We would like to use NetCologne’s fiber optic connections that reach buildings, called "Fiber to the Building" or FTTB. In turn, NetCologne wants to rent VDSL connections from us for the Cologne area. This should result in a Bitstream-Acess-Product offer for consumers.

Will we be entering into any more partnerships?

Niek Jan van Damme: Yes, we are looking to enter into other cooperations like these. But the possibilities for different partnerships go much further: We also want to increase collaboration with providers. We could imagine operating a network that an energy provider builds, or starting joint ventures that build and operate the networks. We are discussing the topic.

But aren’t we just strengthening our competitors?

Niek Jan van Damme: No one company can cover all of Germany with a single fiber optic network. That’s why we’re relying on collaboration with competitors and local network operators. Expansion will then be more efficient thanks to mutual usage of infrastructure because the networks will be better utilized.
