Happiness doesn't come by itself

Today is World Happiness Day. The day of remembrance - initiated by the United Nations (UN) - is to focus on the significance of happiness. A good reason to draw attention to it from an employer's perspective.

What's happiness? Are it only the great goals of fighting poverty, pollution and inequality? Or are it the smaller things that make us happy? Being there for people, doing something good, giving a smile and keeping oneself fit and healthy. For the majority of Germans, happiness actually means helping others. The second most important thing, however, is the joy of the apprenticeship or the job. If we then become aware of how much time we spend each day at work - whether in the office, in the field or in the home office - it quickly becomes clear that the employer has a great responsibility for his employees.

To fulfill this responsibility, Deutsche Telekom has launched the #youmatter initiative. It is important for us that colleagues feel comfortable in what they do and how they work. Only if we are doing well we are able to support others and be there for them. This is as true for the family as it is for the team.

Even so, you can make colleagues happy. A special kind birthday greeting.

But is it always that simple? If the phone keeps ringing, the email inbox gets full and then maybe a super urgent priority order lands on the table, which has to be completed within the next hour, we get - understandably - into stress. We get angry about the situation and maybe even about ourselves, not being able to do justice to the situation.

If you know this feeling and these situations, I would like to use today's World Happy Day to provide you with a potpourri of ideas so that you can regain focus on your own needs and better master challenges with inner balance - happiness guaranteed.

  • Be silent: Invite your colleagues for a walk or lunch in silence. Too often we try to fill silence with meaningless babble. Do exactly the opposite for once. Perhaps creative ideas will bubble up afterwards spontaneously.
  • Make someone laugh: send out a smile and a smile comes back. This wisdom is certainly not new to you, but remembering it regularly guarantees a relaxed, happy working day. Perhaps with biscuits in the kitchen, a cup of coffee together or a nice compliment?
  • Lucky run: Sport is known to promote the production of endorphins the happiness hormones. How about encouraging your colleagues to jump into their sports clothes during lunch break or after work and go for a relaxed workout? Together it's easier to get over the inner piggy-back.
