Chemnitz has changed dramatically since German reunification, when gray concrete dominated the cityscape. Today, modern buildings blend in with the range of architectural gems from bygone eras. Places like Villa Esche are just a part of the city as the 19th century tenements in the Kaßberg neighborhood or the renovated Schloßviertel district. The third largest city in the new states of Germany is situated in the heart of Saxony. More than 25 years after reunification, its emblem is still the bronze Karl Marx Monument, which stands at more than 7 meters in height. Even though it is the world’s second largest freestanding model of a head, the locals lovingly name it “Nischel” (German for “noggin”).
City of sports
Chemnitz does not just have 200 years of industrial history behind it: Companies in the automotive and supplying industries, IT, and machinery and plant engineering have transformed it into a major tech hub. The city on the northern outskirts of the Ore Mountains is also at the cutting edge of theory with Chemnitz University of Technology. And if that’s not enough for you, Chemnitz is also a city of sports. The home of Michael Ballack, Matthias Steiner, and Lars Riedel has a wide range of sports and facilities fit for all levels, from beginner to Olympic champion.
