Do you want to live in one of the best regions of Bavaria, with the Chiemsee lake, a.k.a. “the Bavarian Sea” on your doorstep? Then come to Traunstein! The “white gold” on the salt route once brought considerable wealth to the town. Even to this day, visitors can see the influence salt has had on the townscape. Everybody knows salt makes you thirsty – what a happy coincidence that one of Traunstein’s other traditions is brewing beer! Legend has it that so much beer was brewed in Traunstein that it did not just quench the thirst of the residents but the fire that broke out in the city in 1851. Beer is still made here today. But it would be a great shame to extinguish a fire with it.

Fly fishing, cross-country skiing, hiking

For a small town with less than 20,000 residents, there is an astounding amount to do in Traunstein. Whether you want to go fly fishing in the Traun river, hiking through the picturesque countryside or cross-country skiing on 30 kilometers of groomed slopes, Traunstein has something for everybody. The town even attracts pilgrims as it is famous for being the place where Pope Benedict XVI spent his childhood. If you like nature, we recommend a trip to the nearby Berchtesgaden National Park. Or if you’d rather go shopping, you can get to the multi-award-winning Europark in neighboring Austria in around 30 minutes.
