Career & current jobs at Deutsche Telekom

Start small, dream big

Meet Birgit. As a Senior Test Manager she is part of the team that developed a future-critical and society-supporting innovation, the Corona Warn App. Her position requires her to be involved in all phases of the software lifecycle, this gives her a broad perspective of the whole development process.

What is the best part of your job?

Birgit: Seeing the big picture. Together with my team we get insights and know-how from every step and get to know the perspective of every team that is involved in the software development process. From requirements management, architecture and design, development and operations to live operation in production and feedback from users. This gives me deep knowledge of different areas, which is always new and exciting. I love the collaboration with the team, the discussions on how we approach the challenges and create the best test strategy for the respective project.

Talking about your business projects, which one has been the most challenging for you so far?

Birgit: Since May 2020, I have been part of the testing team for the Corona Warn App. Many different teams such as architecture, development, operations, security, data privacy and open-source community were involved in this project. Our testing team was in demand everywhere. We only had a few weeks until the Corona Warn App was launched and available for download. After implementing the basic functions for exposure checks and warning others the app was continuously expanded, e.g. for Europe-wide warning, rapid testing and handling certificates.
We were only able to do this because we worked on the solution together as one team, even across different companies. It was a lot of fun even in the most stressful stages. When you face a challenging project my advice is to proceed step-by-step to avoid being overwhelmed by the size of the project.

How do you educate yourself as an expert to make sure you are always up to speed?

Birgit: I truly believe that continuous learning and development are essential. In my field, the certification program of the International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB) is very important and is actively used by us in the team. It offers a wide range of training opportunities for testers and test managers for different topics and levels. I also like to take advantage of the opportunities within Telekom. Last year, I participated in the Digital Engineer program. Thanks to the program, I gained extensive insights into important digitalization topics such as IoT and Machine Learning, which are also becoming increasingly relevant for us in the test team.
