Deutsche Telekom was presented with the internationally renowned “Ethical Corporation Responsible Business Award” for its cell phone recycling campaign in support of “Ein Herz für Kinder”. At the award ceremony on June 25 in London, it won first place in the category of Best Consumer Engagement. Deutsche Telekom thereby beat out a large number of competitors, including Coca Cola Enterprises and Telefonica for example. For René Obermann’s “bet on Germany” with Thomas Gottschalk, dedicated employees and customers collected almost 600,000 used cell phones within 10 weeks. During the “Ein Herz für Kinder” gala event hosted by the German TV channel ZDF, Obermann handed over a total donation in the amount of 1.5 million euros.
For the jury, the decisive factor was not only the project’s scale but also its impressive creativity. Jury members acknowledged the project included many activities, ranging from postal dispatch to collaboration with the German national soccer team. They also praised Deutsche Telekom for its great dedication and were impressed by the campaign’s sustainable effect. Deutsche Telekom is the only international ICT company to have won in one of the 13 categories.
