The Internet of Things is here: Deutsche Telekom at CeBIT 2017

  • Telekom introduces various industries to the Internet of Things (IoT)
  • New IoT starter packages make the transition easy
  • NarrowBand IoT: the new network for IoT mass applications

Digitization. Simply. Make it happen. That is the Deutsche Telekom motto for CeBIT in Hanover this year, and among the highlights are new starter packages for migrating to the Internet of Things. In hall 4, booth C 38, Deutsche Telekom is exhibiting a wide range of showcases that illustrate how easy it is to connect machines and devices and monitor them in networks – for example, with the new NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) mobile standard, which brings the Internet of Things to mass application scenarios.

New IoT starter packages

Telekom has put together various starter packages for business enterprises to help them adopt the Internet of Things. Thanks to plug & play and scalability features, these bundles support the network connectivity, localization, monitoring and predictive maintenance of machines and devices – no specialized know-how is required.

The "Cloud of Things" IoT starter package includes various sensors that monitor the temperature, position, vibrations and moisture that may affect devices. A mobile communications module sends the data to the "Cloud of Things" platform so that users can retrieve this information through a web portal. The package is available for EUR 199 – which covers the hardware – plus an additional monthly fee starting at EUR 5.95 for the cloud service and data communications. The "Predictive Maintenance" bundle additionally offers connectivity to the Microsoft "Azure" IoT suite provided from Telekom's Multi-IoT Service Platform. This supports extended data analyses and predictive maintenance of machines. The cost of this IoT package starts at EUR 9.95 per month for each connected machine.

Telekom is also demonstrating how the Internet of Things can be leveraged to build new business models. For example, the German manufacturer Hörmann is showcasing its intelligent rolling gate at the Telekom booth: Mobile communications with the "Cloud of Things" gives Europe's leading maker of roller doors and rolling gates access to sensor data in real time, while also supporting remote maintenance of Hörmann products worldwide.

NarrowBand IoT: the new network for IoT mass applications

One of the IoT showcase highlights is NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT): Following the standardization of the new mobile communications technology for the Internet of Things, Telekom quickly completed successful field testing and is now rolling out the technology. Telekom will put the commercial network into operation in Germany during the second quarter of 2017. NarrowBand IoT is distinguished by its wide-ranging coverage and effective building penetration, not to mention its low energy consumption and the low cost of individual modules. NB-IoT supports highly scalable applications that were not feasible in the past – either in terms of technology or cost.

The German energy services provider ista , for example, which is responsible for a network of some 15 million water and heating meters in homes throughout Europe, relies on a Telekom NB-IoT solution to support connected meters in residential and commercial buildings. The solution collects energy consumption data, presents the information on a display and also processes invoices at the same time. Telekom is showcasing ista applications at CeBIT that include a home, an office and a supermarket.

Smart Parking thanks to NB-IoT

At the Smart Parking station located at the Telekom booth, visitors can see how drivers can find a parking space quickly and easily thanks to a new smartphone app – and with just two clicks they get their parking ticket as well. This service helps cities manage the utilization of parking space capacities, while also reducing the number of vehicles on the street. The solution also boosts the profitability of parking services. Another booth highlight focuses on solutions developed by the first start-ups from Telekom's NB-IoT Prototyping Hub. BeeAnd.me , for example, has developed a sensor system that lets beekeepers monitor the status of their beehives – this solution demonstrates how NarrowBand IoT can support connected agriculture scenarios.
