Gabriele Riedmann de Trinidad manages Deutsche Telekom's Energy business area. She explains how Telekom has already taken on board the future requirements of consumers and the energy industry.

How is Telekom responding to changes in the energy market?

Gabriele Riedmann de Trinidad: By investing in communication networks and energy-specific service platforms, we intend to play a pioneering role and become an "enabler" in the energy sector. This is why we are expanding a range of services that concentrate on smart grids, smart meters and home management. Together with our cooperation partners, we are geared up to meet the requirements of a modern, environmentally-aware energy industry.

What innovations are important here?

Gabriele Riedmann de Trinidad: Electronic meters are the key to achieving the energy turnaround. They give consumers an overview of their energy consumption and provide the energy industry with reliable information that will enable them to control tomorrow's grid efficiently. With its communication box or "Multi Utility Server", Telekom is creating added value by allowing the connection of different meters such as electricity, water and gas meters. We can already communicate with 90 different meters made by 20 different manufacturers.

Why is Telekom a particularly suitable partner for the energy industry?

Gabriele Riedmann de Trinidad: We are well placed when it comes to installing a smart grid. No other company in Germany has such a high-quality telecommunications network as us or as many data

Why is Telekom a particularly suitable partner for the energy industry?

Gabriele Riedmann de Trinidad: We are well placed when it comes to installing a smart grid. No other company in Germany has such a high-quality telecommunications network as us or as many data centers, so much IT know-how or our ability to process millions of items of data securely and quickly - all these capabilities are ideal prerequisites for supporting energy suppliers, measuring point operators and the housing sector.

What are your future expectations in the energy sector?

Gabriele Riedmann de Trinidad: The energy industry and ICT will be converging in the same way that telecommunications and information technology did before them. ICT is the putty that holds together the many energy sources that are involved in decentralized energy generation. And I'm not just thinking of photovoltaics and wind power here: now there are things such as pressure-sensitive floor coverings. Admittedly they only generate a small amount of electricity so far, but imagine this technology in airports or rail stations. We will generate electricity in places we haven't even thought of yet. Tomorrow's energy landscape will be networked and very complex.
