Data analytics: When will my train get here?

Getting to the station just as the train arrives; that's exactly what travelers wish for whenever unforeseen events mean departure times are changed, resulting in unplanned waiting. T-Systems is presenting a data analytics solution at CeBIT that offers scheduled transport service providers and their customers automatic information in real time on the departure times of long-distance trains and buses.

The service also continually compares theoretical timetable information with the current transport situation and the regular status reports from the individual forms of transport. This data is then used as the basis to forecast the probable arrival time and, simultaneously, the effect of this on potential connections. T-Systems' powerful data analytics platform can calculate the anticipated effects of changed train arrival times on possible connections for a transport service provider's entire network within ten seconds. This provides transport service providers with a real-time overview that helps them with their planning. Passengers can in turn receive exact information in real time up to 90 minutes before their planned departure on the actual departure time, which helps them plan and use their time efficiently. The forecasting solution can be used by all scheduled transport services, such as rail or bus network operators.

T-Systems uses state-of-the-art data analytics technology. The forecast solution makes use of analytic tools based on Hadoop infrastructure. As a pioneering cloud service provider in Europe, T-Systems also offers data analytics solutions from the cloud. The services are provided from certified high-security data centers that comply with Germany's particularly strict data privacy protection laws.
