Telekom strengthens the OpenStack community with the Open Telekom Cloud

  • Corporate Sponsor of OpenStack Foundation
  • Headline Sponsor of the OpenStack Summit in Barcelona
  • Open Telekom Cloud now also available with Container-Service Docker

Telekom strengthens the OpenStack community with the Open Telekom Cloud. For the first time, the company presented itself as Corporate Sponsor of the OpenStack Foundation at the German OpenStack days in Cologne (21st and 22ndJune). Besides keynote and workshops, concerning the topic OpenStack, Telekom´s business customer division also showed news on Open Telekom Cloud. The Public Cloud offer, which was launched in March, is technologically based on OpenStack. At the OpenStack Summit in Barcelona this October, Deutsche Telekom will act as a Headline Sponsor.

"OpenStack is not unknown in Europe among developers and administrators, but it is not as widely spread as in the USA. German companies and we as Telekom benefit from using the great opportunities that OpenStack offers. Also it is already being used in many production environments and supported by almost every major IT company," says Dr. Clemens Hardewig, responsible for the OpenStack eco-system within Telekom’s business customer division.

At this year’s CeBIT, Telekom has presented the Open Telekom Cloud it’s first own public cloud offering that runs on OpenStack. "Cloud services need to be fast, secure and reliable. Open Telekom Cloud combines innovation potential and practical know-how of a large developer community with extensive IT operations experience, based on OpenStack." says Andreas Falkner, Vice President Open Telekom Cloud at T-Systems. "In addition to our general activities in the Foundation, the OpenStack days in Cologne offered a great opportunity to exchange ideas about application and development with the community and to establish contacts," said Falkner.

The OpenStack Foundation welcomed the partnership with Telekom. “OpenStack has seen impressive growth throughout Europe, notably with public clouds in Germany, France and the UK. Deutsche Telekom has proven itself as a valuable member of the OpenStack community, and their leadership as a Corporate Sponsor of the Foundation and Headline Sponsor of the Barcelona Summit will serve to expand opportunities for OpenStack throughout Europe. “"says Jonathan Bryce, executive director of the OpenStack Foundation.

Huawei, Telekom’s delivery partner for the Open Telekom Cloud, appreciated the development. “In close partnership with Deutsche Telekom we are offering a strong tandem in terms of engagement in the Open Stack Community. Huawei has been an active member of the foundation for four years, delivers and shares important projects. With the Open Telekom Cloud we are building a stable tangent between the technology expertise on the one side and a broad market development and support for Open Stack in Europe on the other side.” commented Huawei’s Dr. Götz Philip Brasche, CTO IT R&D Division on the announcement.

Container-Service is now live
Telekom has chosen OpenStack with intention as a technological basis for their Open Telekom Cloud in order to keep further development and integration as simple and "open" as possible. From mid-July a container service (CCE) is available via Docker - for transferring applications across Clouds. For this purpose, complete clusters of containers can be managed and displaced. Furthermore, a relational database (RDS), with extensive features for managing the database, backup and restore as well as a comprehensive monitoring and tools for performance optimization, will be provided.

Also, Open Telekom Cloud now published RESTful API with full compatibility for OpenStack Standard API for Nova, Cinder, Glance, KeyStone and Neutron, which is beyond the OpenStack DefCore API, and most of them already have the command line support.
Open Telekom Cloud is one of the most powerful OpenStack public clouds in Europe enabling innovative OpenStack strategies for top European enterprises based on state-of-the-art OpenStack standards.
