Deutsche Telekom launches joyn communication service

  • Service available to Telekom customers from December
  • Chat and send files free of charge on all smartphone tariffs
  • Integrated in many smartphones in the future and available immediately as a free app for iOS and Android

Feel. Tell. Show. With "joyn" Deutsche Telekom is set to ring in a new communication era from December. The technical standard defined jointly by mobile carriers and device vendors makes it possible to activate the phone camera and integrate a photo or video 'live' during a phone call. Chat and Send File also provides a new messaging service that fulfills maximum quality requirements. Niek Jan van Damme, Deutsche Telekom Board Member with responsibility for Deutsche Telekom's German business, is convinced that the messaging offer will be a success: "joyn is especially easy to use. Customers don't have to worry which of their contacts uses what service and who can be reached how. 'joyn' makes the cellphone's phone book smarter and, above all, the services function across carrier boundaries. Without any installation, without a login and without the need to move between different applications." The Chat and Send File functions are free of charge for Deutsche Telekom customers who already have a calling plan that includes a data or text message flat rate. In contrast to other messenger services, the volume of data used is not deducted from the volume included in the flat rate. This means that users can send any number of files back and forth without reducing their data volume. And when it comes to video calls, no additional costs are incurred for customers with a voice flat rate or voice minutes package. "joyn" is device-independent and will come pre-installed on many Android and Windows Phone 8 smartphones in future. Owners of older cellphones can simply download joyn as an app to their iPhone or Android. What's more, from next year you can also use "joyn" in Deutsche Telekom's fixed network.
