The eBike streams directly while on the move, the car recognizes its driver’s tariff, and the cell phone can stay at home when jogging with the smartwatch: Deutsche Telekom presents eSIM applications for end users at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona. Among the exhibits are those from renowned partners from the sectors mobility, automotive, computing, and smart wearables.

eSIM is an intelligent chip that is embedded in various devices, which connects with an eSIM profile of the respective user – without the need for manual card changes. Multiple devices can simply be connected via eSIM, provided this is permitted by the cell phone contract. eSIM is based on an international industry standard that is paving the way for tremendous progress in “Internet of Things” applications – for connectivity between networks, applications and people.

Connectivity with Deutsche Telekom when on the eBike or while traveling in the car

Together with the manufacturer Greyp Bikes, Deutsche Telekom has presented eSIM connectivity for the new G6 eBike at MWC. Sensors integrated in the G6 detect the surrounding environment and measure the user’s riding behavior in order to, for example, display navigation tips on a built-in monitor. A special highlight of the new model: two integrated cameras that record footage while on the go. This can then be directly published to the rider’s social media channels.

Connectivity in cars was demonstrated in Barcelona by an exhibit from BMW. Via eSIM, the vehicle connects with the user’s tariff, making it possible to access various information and services in accordance with the personal tariff profile. No matter if on the eBike or in the car, all these functions require a connection to the best network – provided by Deutsche Telekom via eSIM technology.

MDM app manages eSIM applications for the user

MWC visitors could test the eSIM technology with the MDM (Multi Device Management) app from Deutsche Telekom directly on site. On behalf of the customer, the app manages all products and services that use the personal eSIM profile. These are diverse: available to test directly at the Deutsche Telekom stand were a BMW i3, the G6 eBike from Greyp, the Huawei watch and tablets from Microsoft. Adding or removing devices, managing data volumes and telephone numbers as well as the use of tracking services are just some of the many MDM app functions. The connectivity of all eSIM applications is warranted with the MDM app from Deutsche Telekom.

Important for enabling this is the international eSIM technology standard, which the GSMA has presented, explains Claudia Nemat, Board Member Technology and Innovation at Deutsche Telekom: “The sector must now work hand-in-hand when it comes to promoting eSIM and the tremendous potential of this technology. Interoperability is the keyword here – everything is connected. We are taking a giant leap into the future and are now obtaining our first impression of what a real digital life actually feels like. I am proud of the eSIM results that we can today present together with our partners.”
