Deutsche Telekom is premiering another high-caliber series, "My Brilliant Friend" (Meine geniale Freundin), on its MagentaTV program. The series is based on the eponymous international bestseller by Italian author Elena Ferrante. The date for the premiere in Germany is May 2. The eight episodes of the first season are available free of charge – and only to MagentaTV customers. Viewers can choose between a dubbed German version and the original Italian soundtrack. German subtitles can also be activated. "My Brilliant Friend" is another offering from the Megathek, a gratis library of TV series and films that customers can choose from.

Internationally acclaimed TV adaptation

"My Brilliant Friend" is based on the eponymous first novel in a series of four by Ferrante. The book was published in Germany by Suhrkamp-Verlag. It has sold over five million copies worldwide and been translated into 45 languages.

The TV series premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2018. Critics considered it a sensitive adaptation and very faithful to the original novel. Director Saverio Costanzo shows a love of detail, transporting viewers into the world of Naples in the 1950s.

The producers: Fremantle International, Rai Fiction, TIMVISION, and HBO Entertainment.

The plot of "My Brilliant Friend"

Lila Cerullo, Elena Greco’s best friend, has gone missing. The two have known each other for decades. After Lila’s disappearance, Elena Greco begins chronicling their life stories. Their very close friendship began in Naples in the 1950s, where they attended school together. Elena was fascinated by Lila and wanted to be just like her. Later, she comes to see her as her greatest rival.
