Check-in via smartphone, Gigabit WLAN in the room: Telekom digitizes Lindner Hotels

  • Telekom implements fast WLAN up to 1 GB/s for Lindner
  • Best Practice: Otto Lindner at DIGITAL X
  • New central architecture stands for higher security and more flexibility

Telekom has been a partner of Lindner Hotel Group for more than twelve years and has been providing the Lindner Hotel Group with technological and digitization support. So far, 30 hotels and resorts throughout Europe have been connected to the internet via fiber optics. This will enable the entire group to use fast WLAN, reaching speeds up to one Gigabit per second and providing the guests with their own hot spot in their room, including streaming of Netflix, Amazon Prime and Co. Guests will now have the opportunity to conveniently check in and out online using their smartphones and they can gain access to their room by using the QR code as a door opener. Nevertheless, the facility of a key card, at the terminal in the lobby will also be available for the non-smartphone users. The Lindner Hotel Group will also be providing the invoice, upon request, in a digital form. The hotel staff can now be reached via messenger, if the guests have any questions. The Director for Lindner Hotel Group Mr. Otto Lindner will be speaking over the digital innovations in his hotels and resorts at DIGITAL X this October. Digital X is Europe's leading digitization initiative which will be taking place on the 29 and 30 October, in Cologne.

How Telekom accelerates WLAN

Technically, the WLAN is based on a Cisco solution. The Meraki line includes routers, switches, security appliances and WLAN equipment. The distributed architecture makes it easy to replicate the configuration of the network. All locations could be quickly and conveniently equipped with the new WLAN. Access for the numerous guests is safe and fast. The QoS (Quality of Service) system in the switch prioritizes voice and video applications for smooth streaming.

Telephone system and e-mail security from the cloud

At the same time, the MPLS network (Multiprotocol Label Switching) gets more bandwidth. It connects all hotels, the Lindner headquarters and the computer center. Those responsible have a central dashboard and can see at any time how the bandwidths are distributed. They can adapt these as required. Telekom manages the data center and the same applies to the telephone system. Instead of a separate system in each hotel, there is now the MPLS network. It connects all telephone connections of the individual houses with the system in Berlin. Thanks to the central architecture, ports can be added or removed on a monthly basis. Thus, the system can be easily adapted to the number of employees in each hotel. A cloud-based solution from Telekom helps the hotel chain to protect its e-mail traffic against spam or viruses around the clock via a multi-level filter system. Via a self-service portal, Lindner-IT manages E-Mail Protect Pro itself.

Music by Elbsilber for bar, spa and lobby

Lindner continues to expand its digital guest services together with startups. Example: The music comes from the "Music Box Deluxe" by Elbsilber, a start-up from Telekom's TechBoost program. It delivers the right sound in the hotels. Each house, the bar, the wellness area and the lobby can thus be individually played on. The guests rate the playlists on the boxes. Elbsilber's professional music editors then adapt the music selection for each individual area.

The background:
DIGITAL X is Europe’s biggest cross-sectoral digitalization initiative. More than 200 German and international partners are participating in it. The initiative first toured six German regions during the course of 2019. The grand finale of DIGITAL X will take place on October 29 and 30, 2019 in Cologne. The concept is based on networking, exchanging insights and learning from one another in our efforts to drive on the digital revolution. And the very best enterprises will receive the “Digital Champions Award” for their work. StartupCon will be part of the line-up for the first time. The conference will be held in 2019 as part of Europe's largest initiative for decision-makers.
