A good alternative – A hands-on experience with the Fairphone 3

I have tested the Fairphone 3 for one week. Here are my results.

It looks like a usual smartphone, as we have all known it for more than ten years now. It even has the haptic of a usual smartphone. But when you look at the back cover of the Fairphone 3, you will notice the first significant difference: The slightly transparent cover allows you to see all the individual parts of the device. The most striking feature is undoubtedly the battery. In white letters it says: “Change is in your hands”. And indeed: Even though the Fairphone does look like many of its smart relatives at a first glance, it has many special features inside.

Nostalgic Feelings

The first thing that surprises you when you unpack the Fairphone is that it does not include a charger. Luckily, however, it is equipped with a standard USB-C port. Most of us will have several of them in our drawer anyway, so that this is not too much of a problem.
The first task now is to insert the SIM card. In order to do so, you have to dive into the innards of the phone. While many current models nowadays require a small pointed object to open the card slot, the Fairphone offers a more nostalgic alternative: Here, the card slot is located under the battery, just like in the pre-smartphone era. In addition to the SIM card slot, there is also a micro SD card slot that can be used to expand the memory.

Modular design makes the Fairphone special

The phone’s modular design catches the eye even during this first step. Therefore, it does not come as a surprise that the package includes a small screwdriver instead of a charging cable. Although – in theory – the screwdriver is a good idea, in practice it is a bit too small to make a pleasant repair possible. Nevertheless, it works. Most screws were very easy to loosen, only one tried to make life difficult for me. Still, I have to admit: It is a bit unusual to open your smartphone with a screwdriver all by yourself. But after the first small successful results, it even makes fun. And if you really cannot imagine repairing your smartphone, you can still go to your trusted workshop.

Everyday life performance

The everyday life performance of the Fairphone 3 can be described as unremarkable, which is quite positive. It is equipped with Android 9, and the manufacturer already promised an update to Android 10. Fairphone also promises software updates for the following five years. The apps run smoothly so far, the 12-megapixel camera takes very good pictures, the same applies to the front camera. The voice quality of phone calls is outstanding, for both discussion partners. All in all, the technical feature of the Fairphone 3 are comparable to those of a mid-range smartphone, although it may look a bit outdated for some because of its wider edges. Personally, I do not mind the retro look – but it is just a matter of taste. The phone is also quite large (display size: 5.7 inches), comparable to an iPhone 11 Pro. Nevertheless, it fits perfectly in my hand.

Conclusion

To conclude, it can be said that the Fairphone does represent a real alternative to ordinary smartphones, even if it cannot compete with the top devices – but since it only costs 450 euros, you cannot really expect that. On the other hand, it sets a good example with its fair production conditions. The modular design is definitely a plus point, because it extends the durability of the phone. Spare parts can be ordered from Fairphone at acceptable prices. A new battery, for example, costs 29,95 euros, a new display 89,95 euros. So, if you do not need a new smartphone every year and you want to do something good, the Fairphone 3 is the perfect choice for you.
