5G: Europe´s tech leaders join forces to push a European approach

  • Deutsche Telekom Group plays extensive role in the first phase of the EU 5G Public Private Partnership initiative
  • DT joined eight projects spanning the whole range of its 5G infrastructure research
  • Scientific publications, proof of concept demonstrations, large field trials, and patents set to strengthen the leadership of Europe in 5G

Why is it imperative that Europe plays a crucial role on the way to 5G? In Europe about 200 operators are serving about 500 million inhabitants. That makes the competitive situation often complicated, but it gives Europe a strong hand to play in the development of a revolutionary, new worldwide common communications standard. "With the 5G-Public Private Partnership (5G-PPP) we really have the possibility to strengthen the leadership of Europe in 5G by focusing on high level scientific publications, proof of concept demonstrations, large field trials, and patents," says Claudia Nemat, Board Member, Europe and Technology, Deutsche Telekom.

Public Private Partnership in many ways
The European Commission (EC) has initiated 5G-PPP to push Europe’s leadership in the development of the next generation of a worldwide communications standard. 5G-PPP is a joint activity of industry, academia, and the commission. Parts of the activities are funded by the EC with their eighth Framework Programme – Horizon2020. "The 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership offers academia, vendors and operators in Europe an excellent platform for fruitful cooperation and discussions. Much research has been done, the knowledge exists, now it is time to establish standards and realize our dream of a revolutionary new communication infrastructure", says Claudia Nemat.

Europe has the power and diversity to be heard
Like in a choir, where the singers perform one song together, the European key players have to collaborate closely for the best possible outcome. That role of this special public private partnership cannot be underestimated. The initiative channels the powers to enable Europe to speak with a strong voice regarding 5G. 5G-PPP is organized in a total of nineteen projects today. DT participates in eight of them, four times as Deutsche Telekom, two times as OTE, and two times with its mobile brand COSMOTE.

These eight projects deal with access technologies, as well as with the core network. As a leading integrated player, that scope predestines DT for an active role in the research work of 5G for the benefit of Europe and worldwide. "The framework of the 5G-PPP is not only an excellent opportunity to stand shoulder to shoulder with the worldwide 5G research and development, it is a strong example of collaboration inside of our Group and technology leadership, too", says Nemat.

The activities are closely aligned with DT’s 5G activities via a bi-directional exchange of ideas, concepts, and solutions. The outcomes will influence the architectural and conceptual work, tests and trials in the 5G:haus, standardization as well as spectrum activities.
