Frankfurt am Main is Germany’s ultimate cosmopolitan city. It has achieved this status not just through the number of residents (736,000), but through its international importance as a financial, industrial, media, services, and exhibition hub. The city is home to the headquarters of Deutsche Bundesbank, the European Central Bank, and Deutsche Börse AG. Around 8,400 financial service providers, 258 banks, and 160 insurance companies are located here. And these figures are expected to rise over the next few years as a result of Brexit.

Spectacular skyline

The city’s skyline is spectacular. So much so that Frankfurt am Main is also known as “Mainhattan”. But skyscrapers are not all there is to Frankfurt. Many of the city’s districts have a cozy, small-town feel to them. Others stand out for their beautiful old buildings. Although Frankfurt is awesome, it’s not awe-inspiringly large, so you can be in the countryside in no time at all. The Taunus mountains, the Rheingau wine region, the Spessart mountains, and the Bergstraße mountain road are all less than an hour away. You can reach many nearby destinations on public transport, but you can even cover large distances in no time at all from the city, as the international airport, the main-line stations, and the interchange road have transformed the city into a major transport hub in the heart of Germany.
