Anton, Det, Berti, Edi, Conni, and Fritzchen, better known as the Mainzelmännchen, are probably the most famous figures from Mainz. Yet the city is not just known for being home to the ZDF public-service television broadcaster – it is also a Carnival stronghold. The fifth season of the year fascinates people of all ages and is without doubt the region’s biggest public festival. All are welcome here, even if you don’t have a clue what the locals mean by “Helau!” or “Alaaf!”. After all, the Mainz locals are known for being open, caring, and tolerant.
Spundekäs, a cheese spread, is a traditional Mainz dish. Usually served with white wine, you will find it on the menu in almost every wine tavern in the city. As well as a visit to Mainz Cathedral, the city’s emblem, it is worth taking a walk along the banks of the Rhine or a stroll through the Old Town. The winding alleyways are buzzing with life, and there is a boutique, café or lovingly restored half-timbered building around every corner. The evenings are all about partying in one of the city’s top clubs. Plus, students get free entry to most clubs on a Wednesday. Mainz rocks!
