Corporate Responsibility

Priority for the climate

Whether on their way to a customer appointment, business trip or to carry out maintenance work, Deutsche Telekom employees need to maintain their mobility. To make sure the climate doesn't suffer from this, Deutsche Telekom makes sure this mobility is as environmentally friendly as possible.

With over 25,000 registered vehicles in Germany, the Deutsche Telekom corporate fleet is one of the largest in Europe – and one of the most sustainable. In 2015, German Environmental Aid honored Deutsche Telekom's fleet of company cars with its "green card."

Sustainable mobility
In order to make our fleet management climate friendly, we pursue a strategy based on three pillars:

  • Rightsizing: selecting appropriately sized, energy-efficient, low-emissions cars. By introducing our Green Car Policy for company cars in 2010, we also created incentives for drivers of company cars to select smaller, more efficient cars.
  • Economizing: encouraging a fuel-efficient, low-emissions driving style with driver training courses.
  • Substituting: piloting and testing alternative mobility concepts.

By the end of 2015, we had achieved the goal that we set ourselves in 2010 of reducing the average CO2 emissions of all newly purchased cars to 110 g CO2/km. That means our vehicles perform better than the EU requirements of 120 g CO2/km.

Driven to protect the environment
We can further reduce our fleet's CO2 emissions by purchasing vehicles with alternative drives and fuel systems. To do this, we use natural gas and electric vehicles. We are involved in a variety of electric vehicle projects, and with this in mind we have installed charging stations at Deutsche Telekom sites. The long-range use of natural gas vehicles is still very limited due to an insufficient number of natural gas filling stations. We nonetheless promote the purchase of natural gas vehicles by offering these to company car users on preferential terms.

On the go and green
Since 2015, we have offered our employees the chance to purchase a bicycle or e-bike as a green and healthy alternative, through deferred compensation schemes. We offer regional discount monthly or annual travel season tickets for many Deutsche Telekom sites in Germany, especially in high-density population areas. Our employees can use bicycles available at eight major Deutsche Telekom locations to get to their business appointments within the city. We have also offered shuttle services between different sites for many years now, for example between the biggest Deutsche Telekom sites in Bonn and the intercity train station in Siegburg, as well as Cologne/Bonn airport. Telephone, web and video conferences are excellent alternatives to business trips.
