Austria: T-Mobile offers the most modern 3G network in Austria

  • Entire 3G network technology replaced within one year
  • State-of-the-art technology
  • New network technology reduces power consumption by 40 per cent
  • HSPA+ with data rates of up to 21 Mbit/s - upgrade to take place by mid-2010

Today, T-Mobile Austria has achieved another technological milestone in the company's history: In less than a year, with the help of network supplier Nokia Siemens Networks, we replaced the entire 3G infrastructure and brought it up to state-of-the-art level. "Together with our partner, we have replaced our entire 3G infrastructure in less than a year with the most up-to-date system technology", said Dr. Rüdiger Köster, Managing Director of Technology at T-Mobile Austria. "This means that more than 3,000 locations have been re-equipped on site, right across Austria. This project required very strict planning down to the last detail. Our staff, and those of our partner, Nokia Siemens Networks, have done an excellent job here."

The most modern 3G network in Austria Since the beginning of July 2009, more than 3,000 UMTS base stations in the T-Mobile network have been equipped with the most up-to-date system technology. Today, the final base station in Vienna was re-equipped. "The 3G infrastructure exchange forms the basis for the next technological advances which await us in the coming months and years", says Rüdiger Köster. "This new system technology allows us to provide the most modern 3G network in Austria - and we are very proud of that fact".

State-of-the-art technology The new network equipment is much smaller and lighter: The new hardware is only the size of a desktop PC, whereas the previous models had to be kept in man-sized cabinets. The capacity can be expanded by remote maintenance from the company’s head office in Vienna or technically upgraded by a software update. Another advantage of the new system technology is that it supports all the current mobile network standards and their extensions like GSM/EDGE, UMTS/HSPA and is even ready for the next generation of LTE mobile communications.

New network technology reduces power consumption by 40 per cent As well as its technological benefits, the new network equipment also brings a "green" benefit: It uses 40 per cent less power than the previous equipment. "Since the base stations with their transmission and reception systems use a large proportion of the energy of any mobile communications network, we can reduce the CO2 gas emissions which damage the climate by an estimated 2,500 tons a year" reports Köster proudly.

HSPA+ with data rates of up to 21 Mbit/s upgrade The T-Mobile 3G network is thus ready for the next technological advance, HSPA+. The moment the first terminals are launched on the market, you will be able to surf in the most modern network at data transmission speeds of up to 21 Mbit/s. The appropriate terminals are expected in mid-2010.
