Deutsche Telekom comes top in international sustainability ratings

  • Group represented in Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) and in Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI)
  • Financial experts honor commitment to sustainable development

Deutsche Telekom qualified for the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) as the world’s best telecommunications company, as announced by the Carbon Disclosure Project in its fifth annual report on global carbon emissions. More than 315 institutional investors managing a total of USD 41 billion have joined forces in the Carbon Disclosure Project to examine the strategies in climate protection which are being developed by the world’s 500 most important companies. 68 of the companies listed on the Financial Times 500 Index achieved at least 85 of 100 points and were therefore included in the CDLI. As Germany’s best company and the world’s best telecommunications provider, Deutsche Telekom was ranked fourth with the top mark of AAA and 95 points.

Deutsche Telekom is represented on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for the ninth year running. With an increase from 73 points in 2006 to 79 of 100 points in 2007 the company achieved a significant improvement this year. In order to create the index, the Zurich-based Sustainable Asset Management (SAM) rating agency assesses the companies of the Dow Jones World Index and the Dow Jones STOXXSM 600 Index by economic, ecological and social criteria. Deutsche Telekom managed to reduce the gap to the leader from the previous year. Deutsche Telekom assumed the leading role and set the standards in numerous areas.

Leading position in supplier management Financial experts are increasingly convinced that companies master their risks better if they also include social and ecological aspects, in addition to economic ones, in their company strategy. At Deutsche Telekom, assuming responsibility along the entire supplier chain is an integral part of its procurement strategy. With on-site supplier audits and the electronic supplier information system e-TASC, Deutsche Telekom is able to identify social and ecological grievances at suppliers early on and to initiate suitable measures in cooperation with those affected. The analysts at SAM honored this commitment by awarding Deutsche Telekom the leading position amongst telecommunication companies in the Standards for Suppliers field.

Identifying risks and opportunities of climate change Deutsche Telekom regards the effects of climate change not only as a risk, but also as a chance to develop revenues. The Group has taken comprehensive measures to reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption in-house. But in addition to this, it also provides telephone and video conference products which can make a significant contribution to reducing CO2 at the customer end if they are used to replace business trips. For the recently presented cordless telephones of the Sinus range, Deutsche Telekom also ensures that the CO2 emissions produced by the devices are offset elsewhere and therefore carbon neutral. To this end, the company has purchased emission reduction certificates from officially recognized international climate protection projects.
