Deutsche Telekom provides 1,000 traineeships in NRW in 2007

  • North Rhine-Westphalia is the number 1 training location for Deutsche Telekom AG
  • the Company offers training beyond its own needs and invests EUR 200 million annually in training
  • training positions in the IT sector of the future are still vacant - trainees show social commitment

In 2007 Deutsche Telekom is offering 1,000 young people the chance to take up a training position in North Rhine-Westphalia. NRW is thus the number 1 training location for Deutsche Telekom. Junior staff will be trained in commercial and technical vocations at eight locations. In the IT sector of the future in particular, the Group still has free training positions for vocations such as IT systems electronics technician, IT specialist or IT systems business administrator.

IT is a key technology for the whole economy. Specialists in the IT area are therefore also very important for the future. This is shown by the industry barometer of the German Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media (Bitkom), according to which 55 percent of German companies plan to recruit in the IT area in 2007 (1st quarter of 2007). Deutsche Telekom is investing in this industry of the future and is training above its own needs: in Germany almost 25 percent of all IT trainees complete their traineeship at Deutsche Telekom. With an offer of 4,000 training positions across Germany in 2007 and 12,000 trainees at present, the Company is one of the largest training organizations in Germany.

“As the largest provider of vocational training with 12,000 trainees at present we invest over EUR 200 million a year in the professional future of young people, and will continue to do so in the coming years. It is all about securing the future with well trained junior staff”, according to René Obermann, CEO of Deutsche Telekom AG. This Company’s trainees add to some of the best in their trade each year. Last December, three trainees from Deutsche Telekom were submitted for the event “Trainees 2006 – the best of” by the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK).

However, the trainees of Deutsche Telekom are not only the best from a technical point of view. They also show social commitment. At the Essen training site, Deutsche Telekom trainees took sole responsibility for bringing about the HITS (“Handicapped Inhabitants in Technology Systems”) project. The aim of the project is to promote the integration of handicapped people and to show them new ways in which they can exchange with other people. In 2003, the trainees set up a barrier-free Internet café and developed a joint communication platform in the Franz-Sales-Haus in Essen, a home for mentally and physically handicapped people. The trainees also provided PC and Internet training specially tailored to people with learning disabilities. In 2005, the trainees extended their commitment to Diakoniewerk Essen and also made their IT knowledge available there. Mid-April 2007, Diakoniewerk Essen was given two computer systems suitable for use by handicapped people. The plan is to give another computer to the Franz-Sales-Haus in May.

The 2007 training year will start on September 1. In NRW, there are still vacant training positions, primarily in the technical area, at the locations in Aachen, Bielefeld, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Essen, Hagen, Cologne and Krefeld.
