From Copacabana to Lake Constance: Utility companies from Brazil visit T-City Friedrichshafen

  • T-City presents the energy world of tomorrow
  • The focus is on intelligent electricity meters
  • Brazil: 62 million smart meters by 2020

T-City Friedrichshafen will be receiving visitors from South America: On August 25, 2011 a delegation from Brazil will be coming to visit Deutsche Telekom's future lab. Over 15 representatives of Brazilian utility companies and authorities are coming to T-City to learn about IT-supported energy solutions and concepts. One of the focuses will be the smart metering project in Oberhof and Windhag. Since the beginning of the year, both Friedrichshafen districts have been equipped throughout with intelligent electricity, gas and water meters. Brazilwants to install 62 million smart meter "In the area of energy, Brazil is clearly one of the future markets" says Gabriele Riedmann de Trinidad, head of the Group business area Energy at Deutsche Telekom. "We see a huge potential for smart metering primarily because the country wishes to install 62 intelligent electricity meters by 2020." In T-City Friedrichshafen, visitors will have the opportunity to see one of Germany's biggest smart metering projects: In the districts of Oberhof and Windhag alone, some 1,600 households have been equipped with smart meters. The smart meters automatically send the measured data to the utility companies by radio or DSL. A software program processes the information and makes it available at regular intervals to the customer via a personalized Internet portal. This enables users to determine, for example, how much energy each device in the household requires and thus provides the opportunity for them to improve their personal energy balance. "At the moment, we are also working towards connecting smart metering with home networking systems. Consumers will not only be able to identify energy saving potentials, but will also be able to control almost their whole household remotely with their smartphones", explains Riedmann de Trinidad. Brazil is one of the cleanest nations in the world in terms of energy production. The country currently covers 94 percent of its energy requirements through renewable sources; 84 percent of the power is produced through hydroelectricity. However, Brazil is also one of the fastest growing countries in the world both in terms of its population and its economy. Its energy requirements are growing proportionally. The corporate consulting company, KPMG, estimates that by 2020 energy consumption will reach more than 700,000 gigawatt hours per year - in 2008 it was still 420,000 gigawatt hours. In order to meet this requirement, Brazil is focusing on renewable sources and on expanding energy production from coal, gas and nuclear power.
