Secure Solutions: Don't Be Afraid of Hackers and Viruses

T-Systems Makes Information Technology and Telecommunications Secure Firewalls, anti-virus software and virtual private networks (VPNs) protect companies and public institutions against large-scale damage from hostile attacks. At CeBIT 2002, T-Systems is presenting new security solutions and security strategies for the Internet, intranets and extranets. They ensure the secure and disruption-free utilization of state-of-the-art information and telecommunications technologies in business processes.

The growing importance of electronic communication media in the business world increasingly requires precautionary measures to be taken to protect the networks. Though considerable security risks are present when remotely accessing e-mails and company data, about one-fourth of the companies are still using unsecured connections. T-Systems- security solutions cover the entire range of warn and filter systems, encryption software (BestCrypt) and end devices for the secure transfer of data (LineCrypt). Public key infrastructures (PKI) that also integrate biometric processes help companies to secure all of their employees- e-mail correspondence.

Security Thanks to Biometry

T-Systems is presenting a chipcard at CeBIT that stores biometric attributes such as fingerprints or facial features of a person. The system solution consists of a smartcard with the TCOS operating system (T-Telesec Chipcard Operating System), a card reader, a finger sensor or a web camera used for recognizing faces. The personal chipcard contains reference data that it uses to verify the scanned data, for example during an access check when entering a building. There is also a possibility of storing biometric data on chips, which could then be integrated into personal ID cards, cell phones or debit/credit cards.

VPN for Saxony-Anhalt T-Systems has built a virtual private network (VPN) for Saxony-Anhalt that permits encrypted data communication using ISDN, GPRS (General Packet Radio System) and via the public Internet. A VPN protects the system from unauthorized access. Thanks to the T-Systems solution, Saxony-Anhalt can avail itself of any TCP (transmission control protocol) or IP (Internet protocol) applications such as e-mail, SAP R/3 or an encryptable 3270 data stream. An integrated PKI solution makes data incredibly secure. The PKI infrastructure consists of a card reader, chipcards and the certificate of a trust center. This certificate clearly identifies each authorized user and makes communication within the VPN secure. In Saxony-Anhalt, T-Systems utilizes NetPass, a VCA (virtual certification authority).

Pay Securely Online

For the very first time at CeBIT 2002, T-Systems is presenting a solution for effecting secure online payments - a solution that uses digital signatures to authenticate the customer. Sign&Pay makes paying online more secure. The new solution complements the Click&Pay®easy service, a secure and easily integrated payment system for online shops. The basic package enables users to pay via a secure 128-bit SSL connection either by using their credit card or by debiting the payment directly from their bank account. The T-Systems solution can be used in any online shop and with any operating system. All that merchants need to do is to use a standard payment page and a central server. The customer does not have to bear any additional expenses for the setup, operation and maintenance of hardware and software since T-Systems hosts the solution on the server.

Securing Data in a Network of Branches T-Systems has developed a solution for the tobacco producer B.A.T. that protects all IT systems, applications and data from breakdowns and disruptions (business continuity solution). The tasks performed by a round-the-clock computer center are shared by two sites. Essential data are mirrored via a fiber-optic cable so that if one computer center were to be knocked out by an emergency situation, all essential processes could be taken over by the second one. Even if an entire computer center were to break down, the company's business processes would continue without interruption.
