Deutsche Telekom progresses Connected Life and Work vision with advanced Next Generation Mobile Network showcase at Mobile World Congress

  • World's first multi-city NGMN showcase hosted at Deutsche Telekom Marquee (Z3.16) at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, connecting the venue with Innsbruck and Bonn
  • End-to-end demonstration developed through Deutsche Telekom's strategic partnerships with Huawei and Samsung
  • Enhancements to T-Mobile's existing 3G networks will see HSPA+ up to 42 Mbit/s rolled out over the course of 2010

Deutsche Telekom is progressing its goal of delivering Connected Life and Work services to its customers with advanced multi-city trials of LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology at Mobile World Congress. This demonstration will see the Deutsche Telekom Marquee at Mobile World Congress connected with sites in Bonn and a mobile NGMN unit in Innsbruck in a showcase that will bring to life the capabilities of the NGMN for services including high-definition (HD) video streaming, TelePresence and superfast file uploads and downloads.

The showcase will allow visitors to the Marquee to experience HD streaming video from YouTube and MySpace. They will be able to experience next generation mobile social networking sessions; witnessing blazing fast upload and download speeds that allows them to share their experiences in real time, whether they are captured in photos, audio, video or text. In addition, visitors can try out a live video link between the fair booth, a moving NGMN booth mounted in a caravan in Innsbruck and the T-Mobile campus booth at Deutsche Telekom's corporate headquarters in Bonn, demonstrating the potential of NGMN technology to support new types of interaction.

The demonstration is supported by Deutsche Telekom's strategic technology partners, Huawei and Samsung. Huawei worked with Deutsche Telekom to deliver the network infrastructure and Samsung provided the first form factor USB device. This showcase follows on from multiple previous successful showcases of LTE technology for data access and the world's first Voice over LTE via General Access (VoLGA) call that took place in a completely operational environment late last year.

"Deutsche Telekom fully supports the NGMN Alliance in seeking to deliver an exceptional mobile user experience on the basis of having infrastructure, devices and applications available all at the same time. Our showcase in Barcelona illustrates this vision perfectly and underlines our leading position as a major innovator and pioneer in the development of NGMN," says Olivier Baujard, CTO of Deutsche Telekom.

Deutsche Telekom also announces that it will be making evolutionary enhancements to its existing 3G network across Europe, rolling out faster High Speed Packet Access (HSPA+) up to 42 Mbit/s to meet the growing customer demand for mobile data services Deutsche Telekom has seen across its networks.

Deutsche Telekom's vision of Connected Life and Work will see the same services seamlessly and easily flow from consumers' mobiles to their PC to their TVs as content and services move onto web-based platforms and broadband becomes faster and more effective at home and on the move. A key part in enabling that vision is delivering the necessary fixed and mobile infrastructure to support these new, advanced services.

"We have a very exciting vision for the future of communications and entertainment experiences for our customers As we move towards a world of connected life and work, faster and more efficient high speed broadband networks will be a vital element in delivering on this promise," says Baujard. "We will use the entire range of technical options available to provide our customers with seamless broadband connectivity anytime and anywhere. These showcases here in Barcelona will ensure that we will keep this momentum."
