Deutsche Telekom is challenging the market – for clouds, networks, and security

Cloud:

  • Open Telekom Cloud launched with new partner and new customer
  • Enormous demand for German cloud and German data privacy
  • Biere near Magdeburg becomes European Data Hub: expansion by 2018

Networks:

  • New worldwide "ngena" fixed network alliance picks up speed
  • Mobile network cooperation: best 4G service for customers in 100 countries
  • BMW from this summer with Telekom LTE and first managed mobile net

Security:

  • The new "Magenta Security" product series is being launched
  • Internet Protect Pro: a network-based shield for everyone

The second phase of digitization centers around business customers. This is a great opportunity for Europe and for the business location Germany. The entrepreneurial success of digital strategies depends crucially on three factors: the cloud, networks, and security. "In all three fields we are attacking on a broad front as Telekom," says Reinhard Clemens, Telekom Board member and CEO of T-Systems.

Cloud toolkit complete
At the start of CeBIT, Deutsche Telekom is launching the Open Telekom Cloud. This public cloud offering completes its cloud toolkit by adding the last missing element: now customers can purchase not only tailor-made private cloud solutions, but also cost-effectively and securely buy infrastructure, software, and applications via the Internet as needed. Thus customers have the greatest possible freedom of choice in their cloud strategy.

European Data Hub in Biere
Digital business processes generate huge amounts of data, the new currency of industry. To transform a "rough diamond" into a truly "high-carat gem," you need a place to store and analyze data – in other words, a data hub. With its consistent cloud partnership strategy, Telekom has expanded Biere near Magdeburg into a European Data Hub. Nowhere else in the world are leading providers of cloud technology found side by side in one data center. This makes Biere unique and attractive to customers and partners.

Thus SAP is to become a partner for the Open Telekom Cloud. As a new customer at the market launch, the CERN Center for Nuclear Research has announced that it will be using OTC solutions in future. Even before this, more than 200 customers had tested the Beta version and given feedback on the product.

Enormous demand for German Cloud
Since Edward Snowden's revelations, the need for cloud solutions under German data protection law has increased dramatically. Thus in 2015, Telekom sold EUR 1.3 billion worth of cloud services across the Group – an increase of 30 percent. Since German SMEs, in particular, need to catch up with regards to the use of secure cloud solutions, the Group calculates that the high demand for the so-called "German Cloud" will continue.

Expansion of the "Data Fort Knox" by 2018
Against this background, Telekom will be investing an amount in the lower three-digit million range to build Biere 2. Construction is to begin this year, once all the required authorizations are obtained. Construction is due to be completed in 2018. Biere 2 will then provide 150 percent more capacity. Depending on demand, additional expansion stages will be possible. With the Data Fort Knox in Biere, Telekom is putting its cloud strategy on a firm base and by 2018 it aims to be the leader on the European cloud market.

Shared economy in the fixed network: to the "global network" in days rather than weeks
The fixed network alliance "ngena" (Next Generation Enterprise Network Alliance) is picking up speed shortly after getting started. Discussions with network operators and customers are already in full swing. According to the analyst house Ovum, ngena is placing pressure on other providers to either join the alliance or convincingly demonstrate to the market how they intend to offer customers next-generation international networks. Up to now, the principle of ngena is unique: strong providers share their networks. Each one acts on their local market, but can use ngena to offer worldwide networks within days instead of weeks, as was previously the case. Customers have an additional benefit: they can monitor their worldwide network on screen, purchase or cancel additional lines simply – depending on business requirements and just by pressing a button (similar to what happens in the cloud).

Mobile network cooperation: best 4G service in 100 countries
Telekom is stepping on the gas – and not only in the fixed network, but also in the mobile network for business customers: As members of the European mobile network alliance Freemove, it benefits from their cooperation with the Bridge Alliance with its strong base in Asia, Australia, and Africa. Supplemented by T-Mobile USA, the Group thus provides mobile communications in 100 countries in the world and offers customers the best global 4G network.

Telekom speeds up cars on the data motorway
The fastest mobile network will hit the road with BMW: Starting from summer this year Telekom will equip BMW ConnectedDrive with LTE. Thus download speeds of up to 300 megabit pro second (MBit/s) become possible. In addition, the Bavarian car manufacturer will use a Telekom managed mobile network for 60 countries with a unified service. This will give BMW a complete overview over the availability of the mobile networks used in each country.

A network-based shield for consumers and business customers
Security is key to digitization. This applies especially to small and medium-sized companies with insufficient resources to protect themselves against the current threat level. In collaboration with the US manufacturer Zscaler, Telekom is bringing the " Internet Protect Pro" security solution to market and using it to launch the Magenta product family. Internet Protect Pro is a network-based shield for consumers and business customers. The shield package is assembled as required and can be provided worldwide via the cloud. The customer does not need his own software and hardware. The Internet Protect Pro system protects against malicious code, cyber attacks, and data loss in real-time.

Other innovations and announcements will follow during the trade fair and will support the Group's offensive in crucial areas of digitization: the cloud, connectivity, and security.

Experience our products and services live at CeBIT in Hanover from March 14-18 at the Deutsche Telekom stand in hall 4, stand C38.
Digitization thinkers and leaders will discuss their hands-on experiences in top-class talk formats. More information about the program and the scheduled speakers is available at transforum.telekom.com.
