E-world 2011: For the first time, Telekom is offering the energy industry the complete process chain from the cloud

  • Use Software as a Service on demand and pay only for actual consumption
  • First customer: metering and billing service provider modulus GmbH

For the first time, Deutsche Telekom is offering the energy industry a complete Software as a Service (SaaS) package via the Internet. From reading meter data to database services to billing - the complete process chain with over 1,600 individual components will be provided via the cloud. Users will only pay for ICT services they have actually used. Telekom provides the necessary infrastructure via its network to ensure security of the booked business processes. The first customer is modulus GmbH. The company supports energy and network providers in their daily back office business with its portfolio of modular IT solutions. Services mainly include metering point operation, billing and customer care. Thanks to cloud computing, customers benefit from the fact that their processes can be made significantly more efficient, visible and flexible - as well as cost-efficient. In addition, modulus is using service center services. "As a new provider on the market, Telekom’s IT solutions help me to set up and expand my energy business quickly and with manageable investments," explains Johannes Brüssermann, managing director at modulus. "In particular the speed and scalability of the services will convince customers. Add to this cost visibility and you will - pay as you grow!" "Today, our solutions enable energy and metering point providers as well as the housing industry to handle mass data," says Gabriele Riedmann de Trinidad, responsible at Telekom for the Group’s Energy business area. "Germany is still hesitant when it comes to setting up electronic meters. Once they’re available across the country, however, there will be an explosive rise in data volume. Providers will then be glad they have flexible SaaS solutions to choose from instead of running their own applications." Switching the energy industry from fossil fuels to renewable distributed resources presents the energy network with new challenges. The goal is to have a network that can handle these requirements automatically (smart grid). This in turn is based on the knowledge of how much energy will be fed into the network or taken from it where and when. Electronic meters deliver this data base via intelligent information and communication technology (smart metering).

Deutsche Telekom will be demonstrating its energy solutions from February 8 to 10 at E-world 2011, at stand 7-111 (hall 7).

Deutsche Telekom will offset all CO2 emissions generated by its stand by making additional investments in a climate protection project in Brazil.
