A Personal Area Network standard whose main features were set out as early as 1994 when engineer Japp Haartsen and his employer, Ericsson, were tasked with developing a radio link between headsets and cell phones.

In 1997, the Cable Replacement Standard which resulted from this work was named in honor of Danish Viking King Harald Bluetooth (915 to 968).
