The city of Erfurt dates back more than 1,200 years. In the medieval center of the capital of Thuringia, the importance once attached to the city can still be seen to this day. Erfurt’s Old Town is one of the best preserved and largest in area in the whole country. The Krämerbrücke (Merchants’ Bridge) is a famous landmark in the city. Its wooden predecessor dates back to the 12th century, and it is the only bridge north of the Alps to be filled with inhabited buildings.
A metropolis with medieval charm
The city in which Martin Luther studied enchants visitors with its historic buildings, narrow alleyways, and secluded squares. The place boasts so much flair in summer, but Erfurt is also charming in winter. Especially in the run-up to Christmas, when one of Germany’s most wonderful Christmas markets lures in visitors with the scent of roasted almonds. And if you fancy a hearty meal after all these sweet treats, you will not be disappointed by the restaurants, medieval cellars, and taverns in the Old Town. After all, visitors can sample Thuringian dumplings, delicious Thuringian sausages, and locally brewed beer.
