Leading via technology in Europe – an interim report

Deutsche Telekom's aim is to be Europe's leading telecommunications provider – leading through technical excellence. Period. Who actually decides? And how much can we blow our own trumpet and how much light shouldn't be hidden under a bushel? These are big questions! Let’s stick to the facts: Our Chief Technology Officer, Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, has just been named CTO of the year 2016 by Mobile Europe magazine. This award is clear evidence that our Technology colleagues have worked extremely hard throughout Europe, and that others have noticed and appreciated this.

I am also pleased to read about things like the fact that the CEO of Qualcomm sees our presence at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona a few weeks ago as "pioneering." We showed at the event that we have our fingers on the pulse, particularly in regard to the coming 5G communication standard. Before us, nobody had been able to present an end-to-end 5G system to the public. We did that and more – latency times in our system of under a millisecond were a world record that many experts were not expecting.

So, following our role in Europe, we are also active in shaping the future of the telecommunications industry around the world. We can see this, for example, in Bruno's role as chair of the NGMN, a role he will soon have held for two years. The alliance represents the interest of all of the major telcos around the world.

With the activities underway in our 5G:haus, as well as projects such as the XG:fast turbo copper line or the expansion of our innovative Pan-Net network architecture, we are making sure that we and our networks are equipped for the future. This type of long-term measures and investments underlines our ambition to be the leading telecommunications provider in Europe.

In our business, technology leadership is the basis for the best possible customer experience – and that's more than just management rhetoric! The most recent, representative mobile communications test carried out by independent provider P3 sets this out in black and white: 966 of a possible 1,000 points! That's the highest score that has ever been obtained worldwide in a test carried out by this engineering company. This was great work from our colleagues at T-Mobile Netherlands.

It's not only this mobile communications network that is outstanding. Since the start of 2015, P3 has awarded eight of our NatCos the "Best in Test" seal. They tested the relevant mobile communications networks in regard to data services and telephony in all of our European markets. Greece, Hungary, Croatia, Macedonia, Slovakia, Montenegro, Poland, and now the Netherlands too, were all rated best in the category. The P3 engineers are also behind the Connect test, which named our German mobile communications network as the best network for the fifth time in a row. This fantastic overall result was possible thanks first and foremost to our continuous LTE build-out and our network optimization work. The investments are paying off and in the end, the main winners are our customers. So there you have a couple of examples of concrete evidence of our technology leadership in Europe.
