In their cars and on their wrists, the new functions of Deutsche Telekom’s SMART HOME app connect users with their homes thanks to new user interfaces and allow them to keep track of what is going on in their own four walls. Deutsche Telekom will present the latest version of the app, with additional partners and enhanced functions, at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin.
The company will also demonstrate how Deutsche Telekom’s SMART HOME can be controlled from cars. BMW owners with ConnectedDrive can integrate the Deutsche Telekom app on their smartphones with the on-board user interface in the car.
Safe use on the road
The app has been integrated to provide maximum user friendliness, usability and safety, making it possible to regulate thermostats and switch lights and electrical devices on and off while on the road. The app also sounds an alarm if smoke or water discharges are detected at home or if a door or window is open without authorization. In this case, the driver can access a live stream from the camera directly to check whether a burglar triggered the alarm and if they have to call the police. Deutsche Telekom’s smart home system also responds to the vehicle’s location. When the app detects that the car is approaching the home, for example, it can deactivate the alarm system and activate personal settings.
SMART HOME on consumers’ wrists
Deutsche Telekom’s SMART HOME app is now also available for smartwatches from Apple and Samsung. The connected watches display selected information from the app. For example, they can alert wearers when something is wrong at home, allowing users to read important messages from SMART HOME with a glance at their wrist. The smartwatch can also be used to activate and deactivate predefined situations.
Osram Lightify lighting system
The SMART HOME app can now also control the Osram Lightify intelligent lighting system. Users can define a wide variety of lighting moods and colors with the app – such as mood lighting for a festive dinner, functional lighting for the desk or soft light to wake up in the morning – and activate them with a tap of the finger. The lighting system can also be connected with other components and integrated in smart home situations and alerts.
Miele home appliances
With the inclusion of Miele home appliances, users of the SMART HOME app can now keep track of all their Miele@home-enabled devices. From A for accessories to W for wine units, Miele offers a wide range of connected household devices. So users can finally get a remote answer to the age-old question “Did I leave the stove on?”
New components
Deutsche Telekom is also offering new components for its smart home product range. An optical door/window contact is now available, for example. Thanks to its small size, the new device can be installed on doors and windows easily and unobtrusively. The sensor can also be fitted with either a white or brown covering cap. As usual, no drilling or wiring is needed.
The new ZigBee-based connector plugs give users a variety of benefits. The plugs not only switch the connected electrical devices on and off, but also measure their energy consumption. Each connector plug also serves as a signal amplifier in the wireless ZigBee network.
New installation service
In general, users can install smart home components themselves. For those who would rather not, Deutsche Telekom now offers a home installation service. For 199.95 euros, a Deutsche Telekom technician will come to their homes, activate the Home Base, install the app and up to eight components and show users how to operate the SMART HOME features. The service is available throughout Germany and can be ordered effective immediately.
