T-Systems has taken on global logistics activities for the Galileo satellite navigation system worldwide. In doing so, the Telekom subsidiary is contributing to the stable operation of an independent European satellite navigation system. What is more, T-Systems is advising the ESA on the set-up of a global network. The Galileo program is run by the European Space Agency, ESA, on behalf of the European Union. The system is to be ready for operation starting 2014. T-Systems' customer is Spaceopal GmbH, a joint venture between DLR-GfR mbH and the Italian company Telespazio S.p.A., which is responsible for managing and monitoring the Galileo satellites. The framework agreement is in place until 2016 and covers services with a potential volume reaching into the double-digit millions. T-Systems is developing and operating the maintenance and logistics system based on the internationally recognized Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) procedure to ensure that the ground and control centers are ready for uninterrupted operation. In addition, T-Systems continues to advise the ESA on the networking of 30 ground stations all over the world with the two Galileo control centers in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich, and Fucino in Italy. On the basis of the experience gathered, a secure, high availability IP network is due to be commissioned in the future.
