Stay alert when downloading software

Pay attention to the integrity of the data you download. The internet offers a fascinating world of useful programs and engaging games that you can download to your computer—often for free. Unfortunately, downloads are sometimes infected with malware such as viruses or Trojans. This can leave your computer vulnerable.

Follow these tips to stay safer

Only download programs and files from reputable sources. Whenever possible, stick to offerings that are well known online, such as those from major publishers or well-known trade magazines. It is not always immediately clear whether a provider is reputable.
On mobile: Whenever possible, install software only from your smartphone operating system's official app stores, such as Google Play or Apple's App Store. Apps are reviewed by the providers before they are added to their stores.
If you are unsure, do not download it. This also applies to programs that someone you know has supposedly sent you by email or as a link in a messenger app.

Keep your antivirus software up to date and set it to scan new programs during installation.
Do not click through a software installation without paying attention. Read the installer's notices carefully, and pay particular attention to whether the program wants to install additional components.
If the program requests access to data such as your current location or to other apps immediately after launch, check the developer's website to find out why this information is needed.
